3 Things You NEED To Know About Dry Eyes

“Dry eyes is a common — and very treatable — condition.”

— MAYO CLINIC

Dry eyes is a common condition that occurs when your tears aren’t able to provide adequate lubrication for your eyes. They may feel uncomfortable, sting or burn. If this is you, let’s learn more about dry eyes before looking for appropriate treatment!

2 Types of Dry Eye Disease

Aqueous Deficiency: Your body is not producing enough water to maintain a proper aqueous layer in your tear film, causing the lack of hydration to your eyes.

Lipid Deficiency: There is either not enough oil produced to be spread across your eyes, or the quality of the oil produced is poor. Lack of proper oil protection will expose the aqueous layer and make it more vulnerable to evaporation, thus causing dryness.

MAINLY CAUSED BY LACK OF BLINKING

Do you know that 86% of all dry eye patients are due to lipid deficiency based on FDA study? Located in both upper and lower lids, meibomium glands are responsible for producing your lipid layer in your tear film stimulated by the pressure from your blinks. Lack of blinking is found to be the primary reason of blocking those meibobmium glands, which then prevent oil from being produced healthily, leading to dry eyes. Learn more here.

EYE DROPS DON‘T TREAT DRY EYE

Most of the time when we experience dry eyes, our first reaction is to get drops so we feel better… Well guess what? They ONLY makes you feel better, but they do not treat the root cause. Yes, they are just like bandaids to hide your wound without treating it. So, if you have dry eyes, don’t hide them, go see an optometrist!
